Chelsea have agreed a deal with Sporting Lisbon to sign Dario Essugo, following on from the £40m signing of 17-year-old wonderkid Giovanni Quenda.

Essugo will join the Blues this summer for £18.5m on a seven-year deal with the option of a further year, and there are no sell-on clauses or bonuses included in the deal. Chelsea have been monitoring the

20-year-old defensive midfielder, who is currently on loan at La Liga side Las Palmas and is one of the most promising prospects for Portugal’s Under-21s.

The signing provides Chelsea with more midfield options as they prepare for a tough campaign following the Club World Cup. This could affect the fitness of Moises Caicedo and other midfield players.

Essugo is represented by the same agent as Caicedo and Kendry Paez, the 17-year-old youngster from Independiente del Valle who is also set to join Chelsea this summer.
